In addition to ships and cars, planes are now also part of public transport. In contrast to the early years, planes now fly to the most remote corners of the world – planes are a real miracle of technology and have not existed for so long. That is why, today, we present the ten largest aircraft in the world.

Boeing 777-300ER, 64.8 meters

The Boeing 777-300ER is a particular version of the Boeing 777. The ER stands for Extended Range, which can be translated as increased range. This designation is due to the 64.8-meter wingspan. Since British Airways put the Boeing 777-300ER into service on February 9, 1997, 422 units have been ordered, all of which have already been delivered.

Saunders Roe-Princess, 66.9 meters

The Saunders Roe-Princess, developed in Great Britain, had a wingspan of 66.9 meters but was only able to carry up to 105 passengers. The first flight of the passenger flying boat took place on August 22, 1957. Since the budget for this project was exceeded by £ 8 million and a number of technical problems arose, a total of only 3 copies of this aircraft were produced.

Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, 67.88 meters

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, with a wing span of 67.8 meters, was developed in the early 1960s for the U.S. Air Force, where it is still in service today. Until 1982, the military wide-body transport aircraft was the largest aircraft in the world. To date, 131 copies of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy have been made, 6 of which were lost in incidents.

Boeing 747-8, 68.5 meters

The Boeing 747-8 belongs to the third generation of the Boeing 747 and with a wingspan of 68.5 meters is number 7 on our list. The wide-body aircraft has been in production since 2008 and was developed in the USA. The designer for the aircraft, which had a capacity of 410 passengers, was none other than Joe Sutter, who was also responsible for the development of the Boeing 727 and Boeing 737 short-haul jets.

Bristol Brabazon, 70.1 meters

Bristol Brabazon, named after Baron Brabazon, had its maiden flight on September 4, 1949, and was initially intended for civil aviation. The Bristol Brabazon had a wingspan of 70.1 meters, but only a single one has been used in its history. This is probably due to weak engines and inefficient use of the interior.

Convair XC-99, 70.2 meters

Like the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, the Convair XC-99 was designed for military service. The transport aircraft had a wingspan of 70.2 meters and was delivered to the US Air Force on May 26, 1949. Due to better alternatives, only one example found its way into the air in its history.

Antonow An-124, 73.3 meters

The transport aircraft Antonov An-124 was manufactured in the Soviet Union and had its first flight on December 24, 1982. To date, 53 examples of the aircraft, which has a wingspan of 73.3 meters, have been manufactured. The Antonow An-124 was one of the largest aircraft in the world at the time and broke the record for the heaviest single piece of cargo that was transported by air in 1993 when it transported a 135.2-ton Siemens generator and frame. The record was broken in 2009 by the Antonov An-225.

Airbus A380, 79.8 meters

The Airbus A380 is a wide-body aircraft and has a wingspan of 79.8 meters. With a capacity of up to 853 passengers, the aircraft is the largest mass-produced commercial aircraft of all time. The aircraft was designed in Germany, France, Great Britain and Spain.

Antonow An-225, 88.4 meters

The Antonow An-225 has a much larger wingspan than the aircraft so far, namely a wingspan of an incredible 88.4 meters. The cargo plane broke the An-124 record for the heaviest piece of cargo when it transported a 190-ton generator from Germany to Armenia. Despite its empty weight of 175 tons, the Antonow An-225 has a top speed of 850 km / h.

Hughes H-4 Hercules, 97.54 meters

Number 1 on our list is the Hughes H-4 Hercules, which is the world’s largest wing with a wingspan of 97.5 meters. The flying boat had its first flight in 1947 but has only been produced once to date. The aircraft could accommodate up to 750 passengers and could accommodate an 18-person crew.
